THE ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE IN PRACTICE: DYNAMIC RESTING THE ALEXANDER WAY: GETTING UP
When you get up from semi-supine you should take care how you move, so that you do not lose the muscular release you have acquired. If you were to rise by lifting your head first, you would tighten the neck muscles excessively; it is better to roll over on to your side. First choose which side you are going towards and look in that direction by moving your eyes only. Allow your head to turn in that direction, then let your body follow, at the same time bringing your arm across your body and placing your hand flat on the floor. From this position you can bring yourself up on to all fours, still keeping your awareness of your head, neck and back, working all in one piece. Once on all fours take a moment to become conscious of your head/neck/back relationship before moving your bottom back towards your heels and raising yourself into a kneeling position before standing.
